Statistics show lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, but there are ways to avoid acquiring the disease, according to the Centers for Disease and Control Prevention.
The CDC reveals several ways to reduce the risk of developing lung cancer, including not smoking, avoiding secondhand smoke, making sure the home is free from high levels of radon, avoiding unnecessary medical tests involving X-ray images of the chest and following health and safety guidelines in the workplace.
Furthermore, exposure to asbestos, arsenic, chloromethyl ethers, chromium, nickel and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are all substances that are known to cause lung cancer, according to the CDC.
The CDC says the number one cause of lung cancer is smoking, which cites statistics that show inhaling tobacco is the cause of about 90 percent of the disease in men and almost 80 percent in women. Smoking is also a key contributor to other cancers like stomach, acute myeloid leukemia, mouth and throat, and pancreatic, says the CDC.
On top of quitting smoking, proper diet and sufficient exercise will decrease the chance of obtaining any disease. These healthy choices may allow people to realize lower payments on their health insurance and life insurance policies.
